TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Teachers in the Toledo Public School system are fearing for their jobs and the quality of education for students after receiving a letter from the teacher's union.

The notice, dated March 8, states Superintendent John Foley plans to cut art, music and physical education teachers in elementary schools. It goes on to say other elementary teachers will take over those classes.

Toledo Federation of Teachers President Francine Lawrence explains the termination of those teachers is one of the options Foley has listed to the board to cut. Though the move would remove one-third of the district's $30 million shortfall, she says it gets at the heart of education.

The art, music, and physical education teachers worry others won't have the time or the skills to teach those special classes, which means students will lose out.

The notice encourages teachers to attend a public input meeting on March 17 to voice their concerns.

Neither Lawrence nor Foley would go on camera, saying they would not negotiate teacher contracts in the media.
