In the middle of this financial gloom, there is hope for downtown Toledo.
When it opens this fall, the new arena will form the final point on the triangle that includes Fifth Third Field and the Convention Center.
I just toured the arena, and it will compare favorably to any facility of this size, anywhere. It will be a special place.
And most of the work has been done by local labor. These guys are skilled and they are proud of what they helped create. Between hockey, arena football, concerts and events, the arena should bring enough people downtown to justify additional development.
With the right people in charge, and the freedom to make decisions, downtown will recover.
It won't happen overnight, but the arena is a huge step toward getting there.
