I am standing in front of the Erie Street Market, yet again, because this is one mess the mayor made that just won't go away.
Last year, to much ballyhoo and fanfare, the Mayor announced the sale of the Erie St. Market to Tetra Tech. This was going to be a wonderful thing that would lead the way to development including a scenic riverwalk.
Well, here's where we are now. On May 28, if Tetra Tech does not sign the purchase agreement, it walks away; and not on the rivewalk. No, Tetra Tech gets out of town with the $75,000 in so-called earnest money back in its own pockets. The taxpayers will be left holding the bag for utilities and upkeep. Just like always.
Tetra Tech could ask for an extension. Given the horrible economic downturn since this deal was announced, do you really believe Tetra Tech is going to honor that $4.2 million price tag if it doesn't have to, and there is no penalty? If so, then I suggest you join hands with the mayor and take a merry stroll on his imaginary riverwalk. Just don't fall in, it's got a few slippery spots.
