TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Police are still on the lookout for the vandals who pelted dozens of new cars with rocks in north Toledo.
The crime happened early in the morning on May 20. Workers told police somebody threw rocks over an 8-ft. barbed wire fence, damaging about 60 Honda vehicles at Ann Arbor Distribution on Counter St. The cars included new Honda Accords and Acura TLs.
"Now this is really stupid!" says retired Sgt. Richard B. Murphy. "Throwing rocks at brand new cars causing extensive damage... $30,000 to $40,000 dollars!"
The dollar amount on the crime is truly staggering. But bad as it is, it could be about a lot more than just what occurred here according to Murphy.
"Parents, you have the responsibility to know what your kids are doing. And I hope on this crime, you're going to be held accountable."
A crime like this points to a more disturbing violent streak that could play out in a much more tragic way. The best way to nip it in the bud is if you think you know who's responsible to step up. If not, you're part of the problem.
"If anyone out there in our community, especially this Manhattan Boulevard area, knows who did this damage," asks Murphy, "call Crimestopper immediately: 255-1111."
As always, be particularly alert about what people may be saying about the crime. Often, those responsible just can't help but brag about it.
"These punks have to be arrested and held accountable for this crime!"
