(WTOL) - The Toledo International Youth Orchestra will be traveling to Tanga, Tanzania, as part of a musical and medical mission trip.
The group has already toured Europe, Canada and China.
"We're taking 20 donated violins and a medical team," said Haley Armstrong, the orchestra's concert master.
The orchestra has been practicing for weeks for this year's trip, but it's not just about a performance.
"When we went to Europe, we studied more European, basic European music. And when they went to China, they definitely played some of their Chinese pieces. So I'm definitely excited to learn the musical history and cultural history," Armstrong said.
The orchestra's director believes each new place the group visits is a new opportunity.
"Hopefully, they can learn something different and open their hearts, open their minds to learn something," said Director Yang Kun Song.
Plus, each of the members gains friends around the world they keep for life.
