The 15th of each month is birthday party time. Cake and ice cream are served in honor of any resident (or employee) who is celebrating a birthday that month. Special birthdays have special celebrations – we recently celebrated a 100th birthday with a segment on local television.
Another very special and unique event that we hosted was a high school graduation ceremony for one of our World War II Veterans. While a senior in high school, duty called and he joined the Navy missing the completion of his education and subsequent graduation. The ceremony that we hosted was complete with cap and gown; board of education officials, dressed in their ceremonial robes, who presented our resident with his framed diploma.
Holidays are very special to residents and families. Special dinners are held: Victorian dressed singers entertain and Santa visits with gifts for everyone.
Our Senior Olympics is a most anticipated event. The residents, families and employees get to participate in various sporting events. Gold, silver and bronze medals are awarded to the many participants.
Summer picnics on the grounds are also enjoyed by residents, families and employees. We have been known to have impromptu classic car shows at some of our picnics. We even had a convertible show demonstrating all cars that could put their tops down.
Of special significance is the annual Veterans breakfast that we host. Our first breakfast in 2008 held at the Bedford library had about 15 participants. Our breakfast in 2010 had to be moved to a VFW facility because of the significant increase in the number of veterans attending. We provided special transportation for any of our resident veterans who wanted to attend the breakfast.
We also celebrate many national days: national waffle day, national pie day, national hamburger day, national fried chicken day, national cheese cake day, etc., etc., etc.
