Bariatric surgery

Bariatric surgery - surgery for weight loss - has helped many people with serious weight-related problems look and feel better. This life-altering surgery also helps reduce serious health risks associated with obesity, such as high blood pressure, heart disease and type 2 diabetes. If you are considering the procedure, the hospital's bariatric surgery team can help you explore all of your options and make the choice that is best for you.

While there are several types of bariatric procedures, most surgeons only offer one or two. The Center for Weight Loss Surgery (CWLS) at Wood County Hospital offers a total of four laparoscopic and open bariatric surgical procedures. The most common procedures include the Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and the Laparoscopic Gastric Adjustable Band.   In addition to these procedures CWLS offers the Sleeve Gastrectomy and the Biliopancreatic Diversion with a Duodenal Switch (BPDDS). Surgical revisions for previous surgeries are also performed for patients who qualify medically. Additionally, the program offers a non-surgical, medically supervised weight management program for those individuals who do not qualify for the surgery.

Bariatric surgery is not "one size fits all." There is no specific procedure that is best for every patient. Factors that impact the choice of procedure include the patient's age, current state of health, current weight and desired outcome. Other factors, such as a desire to get pregnant, and the ability to begin and maintain an exercise regimen, must be considered.
