TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - When something goes wrong with one of your electronics, you probably dither over whether to replace it or to make another purchase, especially during these tough economic times.
"We get a lot of people who bought... an HD set three or four years ago, paid $4 or $5 or $6,000 for it," said Randy Auslander, owner of Phil's TV. "They come in and are perfectly willing to spend too much money to fix it."
Get this: That TV you bought a few years ago for $6,000 can be replaced for about $600. So here are some things to consider when wrestling with the repair or replace conundrum: How long should it last? And how much will it cost to replace?
"One of the things you have to remember about the big appliances, things like the stove, dishwasher, microwave and especially the refrigerator is how much is it going to cost to install it and how much are you going to have to pay to get rid of the old one?" Auslander said.
It's true that a new one might save money by being more energy efficient or may have new features you just can't live without.
And what about video games? Auslander says it's a different story if you have a PS3 or an X-Box.
"For a lot of them it's just a matter of correcting heat problems. But we also get into replacing laser and hard drives and things like that..." Auslander said.
Auslander, not surprisingly, thinks it sometimes makes sense to pay for the repair.
"Probably 80 percent of our repairs go out of here under $100 and obviously you can't replace anything for $100, so most of the time it makes sense [to fix it]," Auslander said.
