TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - A recent attempted carjacking got retired Sergeant Richard Murphy interested in sharing some tips on what to do if this happens to you.
Murphy says it is wise to think ahead when approaching your empty, locked car.
"Look your car over as you are coming to it. Look and see there is no damage to it, there are no broken windows, no one has messed with the keys, the door locks or anything like that.
Murphy says once you get to your car, look back. Also, if someone is forcing you into your car or is already in your car, yell, scream and make a scene.
He stresses it is important that you not go with the person. "If someone is in there and you go with them, then you're at their mercy."
If they get you in your car, draw attention to yourself with your driving, then get out of the car as soon as possible -- or run into something.
Murphy says it's better to get hurt trying to get away in public then to end up secluded with your life in the hands of a criminal.
