TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - UFCW Local 75, the Toledo union that represents some Red Cross workers, joined a national strike Wednesday.
The union is protesting what they call unfair labor practices arising from the collective bargaining negotiations with the American Red Cross.
According to UFCW Local 75, bargaining issues include blood drive staffing practices that employees believe are key to protecting donor and blood safety.
Toledo Red Cross spokes person Karen Kelley says the blood supply will not be affected by the strike.
Spokespeople for area hospitals ProMedica and Mercy Health Partners say they have adequate blood supplies and they do not feel the strike will affect their supply.
Over 150 workers in Toledo will be on strike, and walking the picket lines at Red Cross Offices at 3510 Executive Parkway and 1111 Research Drive.
The seven unions represent more than 1,000 American Red Cross blood drive workers from Connecticut to California. The unions say they plan to limit the duration of the strike to protect the public interest of maintaining an adequate blood supply.
