WTOL Editorial: New cranes offer competitive advantage for Midwest Terminals

Updated:

(WTOL) - Things are looking up at Midwest Terminals at the Port of Toledo because of the new Liebherr Mobile Harbor Cranes.

In fact, they are the only twin cranes of this size on the Great Lakes.

For the Port, this is a competitive advantage: the Midwest can handle more ships in less time.  That saves money for ship owners and makes the Port of Toledo a very efficient place to unload cargo.

The cranes stand 140 feet tall and move about 84 tons with every swing. They move around on an intricate system of multiple rubber tires and are not limited to rails like the older cranes.

This also means they can work in tandem, which is even more efficient.

The cranes took about one month to assemble.

They are going to be significant to the Port of Toledo and to northwest Ohio for a long time.
