TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Toledo police have made several arrests in connection to more than 80 suspected arsons, and most of the suspects are minors – one is 12 years old.
It's mostly vacant houses the teens are targeting. There aren't really geographic boundaries as dozens of fires have been set in south Toledo and east Toledo. Most recently, north Toledo has seen suspected arson activity as well.
Retired Toledo Police Sergeant Richard Murphy says the crimes are most likely gang-related or juvenile mischief.
However, there have been adult suspects as well. Toledo police arrested 42-year-old Henry Lee Jackson Thursday in connection to a suspicious fire on Thayer Street in south Toledo. He's being investigated for other suspected arsons in the area.
Neighbors on Thayer Street pointed Jackson out to police and say they saw him both before and after the fire. Murphy says neighbors of these vacant homes are key. "You know what neighbors, come forward before it's too late or you're sorry when something drastic happens," he said.
Police have said it is likely more than one person or group is starting the fires. It's yet to be seen if this first round of arrests puts a dent in the skyrocketing number of fires Toledo fire crews have been responding to on a daily basis.
