Toledo Mayor Mike Bell's trip to China reveals a lot about his approach to being mayor.

Bell kept the idea of the trip a relative secret and didn't gather a big committee of business and civic leaders so they could all get aligned on the message of Toledo.

In other words, he didn't turn an overseas trip into a media circus.

Instead, he quietly slipped out of town, was able to establish his own agenda and controlled expectations.

Bell talked a lot about regionalization in his campaign and he does seem to perceive himself as the top ambassador not just for Toledo, but all of northwest Ohio.

In this self-defined role, he went to China, a market that possesses billions and billions of dollars of untapped potential, to get to know some people.

And he's a hard guy not to like as he shook a lot of hands and evidently met with a bunch of rich people who could possible do business in this region.

Bell kept the expenses and the expectations low.

He is his own man and doesn't worry too much about pretenses and pomp and ceremony.

Mike Bell likes to be thought of as an average sort of guy, but he is one-of-a-kind and I hope he becomes an extraordinary mayor.
