Byron Pitts, the CBS News Correspondent, was in town this week as the guest speaker for Read for Literacy and Authors! Authors! I had a chance to meet him since I provided the introduction to his presentation.
His new book, "Step Out on Nothing", is the remarkable story of how faith and family helped him conquer life's challenges. Raised by a single mom in the south, Pitts was called mentally retarded as a young child and was functionally illiterate at 12 and he is a stutterer.
Pitts refused to accept those labels and limitations. His inspirational story should serve as a guide for us all. Get the book. Read it. Read it to your kids. His is a message of hope, perseverance and faith. I think we could use some of that right now.
