SAN DIEGO (AP) - Rookie Jesse Hahn held St. Louis to one run and four hits in seven innings to lead the San Diego Padres to a 12-1 victory last night. Yangervis Solarte had four hits. The Padres tied their season high with 16. The Padres fell one run shy of their season high.

BOYNE VALLEY TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Andy Ruthkoski has shot a 1-over 73 and won the Tournament of Champions at Boyne Mountain Resort by one stroke. The golfer from Muskegon finished the three rounds Wednesday at 13-under 203 to win the event for the second consecutive year. Runner-up Bob Ackerman of Commerce Township shot a final-round 69.

DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Lions running back Joique Bell says a lot of people counted him out when he was undrafted out of Wayne State. Bell has established himself as player valued enough to get a multimillion-dollar contract four years later. Bell was back on his college field last night with his NFL teammates for a public practice.

DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Lions have claimed wide receiver Quintin Payton off waivers from Tampa Bay. Detroit added the undrafted rookie from North Carolina State two days after he was cut by the Buccaneers. Payton will get a chance to compete for a roster spot at a position led by Calvin Johnson and Golden Tate.
