Cabrera homers, Tigers beat White Sox 8-6
DETROIT (AP) - Miguel Cabrera hit a two-run homer, Justin Verlander pitched seven solid innings and the Detroit Tigers held on for an 8-6 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Tuesday night.
Cabrera was 4 for 23 on this homestand before going 3 for 5 on Tuesday - including a homer and a double off Chicago's Charlie Leesman, who was called up from the minors to start in place of an injured Chris Sale.
Verlander had little to worry about after allowing a first-inning homer to Jose Abreu. He allowed two runs and eight hits, striking out seven and walking two.
Chicago's Dayan Viciedo had a career-high four hits, and Adam Dunn hit a two-run homer in the ninth to pull the White Sox within two. Joba Chamberlain got the final out for his first save, retiring Alexei Ramirez on a liner to left with one on.
Bruins beat Red Wings 3-0 in Game 3, take 2-1 lead
DETROIT (AP) - Tuukka Rask finished with a 23-save shutout to give the Boston Bruins a 3-0 win over the Detroit Red Wings on Tuesday night for a 2-1 playoff series lead.
Dougie Hamilton and Jordan Caron scored in the first period, and Patrice Bergeron added an empty-net goal late in the game. The Presidents' Trophy-winning Bruins are ahead for the first time in the opening-round series. And, it seems like a commanding lead the way Boston has played the past two games.
Detroit has to win Game 4 on Thursday night to avoid facing elimination when the series shifts back to Boston.
Jimmy Howard made 31 saves for the Red Wings, who needed him to make what appeared to be a routine stop midway through the first period on the first goal. He couldn't.
Sale relieved injury doesn't appear serious
DETROIT (AP) - Chris Sale figures his arm injury could have been a lot worse.
The Chicago White Sox believe Sale has a strained muscle in his throwing arm, and the ace left-hander was officially put on the 15-day DL on Tuesday. There does not appear to be any ligament damage.
Sale says it is similar to an issue he dealt with in 2012, and he "absolutely" expects to be back once he's eligible to come off the DL. The move is retroactive to last Friday. The White Sox recalled left-hander Charlie Leesman from Triple-A Charlotte to start in Sale's place against Detroit on Tuesday night.
Chicago also assigned right-hander Frank Francisco to Charlotte after a stint at extended spring training.
Lions start 1st minicamp under Caldwell sans Suh
ALLEN PARK, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Lions have begun their first voluntary minicamp under first-year coach Jim Caldwell without Ndamukong Suh (ehn-DAHM'-uh-kehn soo).
The two-time All-Pro defensive end was not on the field with his teammates Tuesday afternoon during the 10-minute portion of the workout that was open for the media.
A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press on Monday night that Suh will attend organized team activities in May and a mandatory minicamp the next month. The person spoke on condition of anonymity because Suh was not announcing his plans.
Suh is entering the last year of his contract.
Detroit cornerback Chris Houston and wide receiver Carlin Isles also were absent when the media had access to Tuesday's minicamp.

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) - The Detroit Pistons say they're shifting their radio broadcasts to WMGC-FM, with the station providing "around-the-clock coverage" of the NBA team.
The Pistons announced Tuesday that they've signed a multi-year contract with the station. The team's games have been carried by WXYT-AM and -FM.
The team says WMGC will broadcast all 82 regular-season games ad any playoff games. It says the station also will carry "daily 'Pistons Minutes' ... talking about all aspects of the team throughout the broadcast week."
