Economy not grounding summer vacations

Posted: Updated:

When it comes to Summer vacations, parents say they are important, if not critical.

"Very important. It's very important to keep the kids active because after school they get restless," said Orsayor Simmons, a Toledo parent.

Orsayor Simmons and her four kids just got back from a trip to Disneyland, which is in California. She worried about one thing while booking the trip.

"Price. Price. That's the biggest thing is the price," Simmons said.

Her travel agent was her brother-in-law, who helped save her hundreds of dollars.

"You would be surprised what you can find from Google. Always Google. Get coupon codes," Simmons added.

Travel agents at AAA Travel of Northwest Ohio are swamped these days booking trips.

"Summer months are extremely busy when it comes to travel and all the kids get out of school and the parents of course want to take that great vacation very memorable with the kids," said Patty Hicks of AAA Northwest Ohio.

Patty Hicks encourages parents to look into all-inclusive packages and use rewards like frequent flyer miles to get the best bang for their buck. She says with gas prices dropping, more people are opting to drive rather than fly.

"They're driving east coast, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head are always popular. Disney is always extremely popular, either Disneyland or Disneyworld," Hicks said.

A trip the entire Simmons clan took, even though money is a little tight this Summer.

"I always want my kids to know the world is limitless. I never want them to feel, oh my mom or dad doesn't have enough money, so we can't do this," Simmons said.
