Selling or leasing the Ohio Turnpike is a hot topic. Governor Kasich seems determined to do something sooner rather than later. Why the rush?
This turnpike issue is too complex to race to a decision. To begin with, we are talking about billions of dollars, hundreds of jobs, and a couple hundred miles of heavily trafficked roadway. And, any lease or sale will impact decades.
I think we should slow down and evaluate our options. For example, when was the last time the existing turnpike operation was examined for new efficiencies? It is possible that a leaned down turnpike operation is a much better deal for the state than giving up ownership.
The turnpike isn't going anywhere. I hope the governor takes his time and listens before he makes this crucial decision.
