The Lucas County Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol reported on the crash through a news release late Thursday morning.
A semi truck driven by 55-year-old Michael Borowy of Warren, MI was traveling on I-475 northbound in the right lane when a pickup truck tried to merge onto the highway.
The pickup truck was driven by 68-year-old James South of Monclova, OH. The two vehicles collided. The 2004 Dodge Ram pickup driven by South became disabled in the roadway on the bridge overpass of Manley Road and the Ohio Turnpike. The semi truck was able to continue past the bridge and stop just north of the collision.
No injuries were sustained by the drivers of the semi truck or pickup truck due to the collision.
South was outside of his vehicle while it was still disabled in the roadway.
Another vehicle northbound on I-475 pulled over to assist at the crash. That was a 1997 Toyota Camry driven by 40-year-old Jodi Lubas of Maumee, OH. She was also outside of her vehicle.
Another woman, 48-year-old Diana Dixon of Wooster, OH also stopped her car just north of the crash and was running back along I-475 to assist.
Two more vehicles that were northbound on I-475 came upon the crash scene and became involved in a chain-reaction crash with the vehicles and occupants of the vehicles on the roadway. Those new vehicles involved were a 2002 Harley Davidson motorcycle driven by 52-year-old Dale Barnisher of Grand Rapids, OH. Also another semi truck driven by 65-year-old John Tucker of Flint, MI.
Barnisher was ejected from his motorcycle and landed in a field between Manley Road and the Ohio Turnpike on the east side of I-475. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
South and Lubas were also struck while in the roadway and were pronounced dead at the scene.
Dixon jumped off the I-475 bridge overpass into the field on the east side of I-475 to avoid being struck and sustained critical injuries. She was transported to University of Toledo Medical Center.
