TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Toledo Police Sergeant Gloria Burks will appear in court for a hearing Thursday.
The officer is accused of shooting Sgt. Jeff Bechtel in the arm last September while they were on duty. She faces criminal charges of assault and felonious assault, but her attorneys claim it was due to a seizure disorder that the department knew about.
Witnesses expected to take the stand Thursday include an investigator and Burks own attorney.
Burks attorneys say she went through an open heart surgery and afterward developed a seizure disorder. They say she cannot remember what happens during a seizure.
The hearing begins at 2 p.m.
Burks is scheduled to go on trial later this month, but there are now questions if Burks medical history should have been kept sealed and why it was released.
If found guilty, 30-year veteran of the force could spend up to 11 years behind bars.
