City Council to vote on demolition of NorthTowne Mall

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - The days appear to be numbered for the former NorthTowne Square Mall.

Toledo Mayor Mike Bell announced plans for the city to acquire a 69-acre piece of property and tear down the vacant portions of the mall, leaving the Super Fitness facility standing.

"Because NorthTowne has been vacant and dark it has hindered development along Alexis Road", says Councilwoman Lindsay Webb.

The plans calls for the current owners to pay up on its outstanding code violation fines, back taxes and utility bills before the city would take title and use EPA revolving loan funds to demolish the vacant portions of the mall.

"We are able to take control of the building and be able to do something dynamic with that piece of land. We will not be using general fund monies", says Mayor Mike Bell.

The plan, if approved by council, would have the city recouping $700,000 for demolition through the resale of the property.

The mayor's office anticipates demolition to start early next year, with a 69-acre site ready for redevelopment in the Summer of 2012.

A council committee hearing is set for Monday, November 28, at 1:30 p.m. inside council chambers at One Government Center.
