MORROW, OH (WTOL) – It is a Christmas mystery for an Ohio family and it all started with letters to Santa. It became an experience they will never forget.
In the grand scheme of things, it is not the biggest of mysteries but it is kind of strange.
"No clue. Not at all," said father Micah Steele.
A few weeks ago, 7-year-old Lydia and 4-year-old Levi Steele wrote letters to Santa.
"I had every intention of intercepting the letters before the post office got a hold of them and I completely forgot to get them out of the mailbox," explained Steele.
The matter was forgotten until Tuesday. Two packages appeared on their doorstep with two handwritten letters to the children. One of the letters said, "Dear Lydia, thank you for the Christmas letter."
The packages contained the very toys the children had asked for in their letters.
Area postal stations usually deliver letters to Santa to the Dalton Street branch in Cincinnati. But Betty Smith said the Steele's letters did not make it.
"It was not the U.S. Postal Service. We did not deliver the gifts," said Smith.
In Morrow, where the Steeles live, letters to Old St. Nick often end up at the Salem Township Public Library. But Library Director Jerri Short said they never saw them.
"We can't take credit for this mystery of Christmas," said Short.
The Steeles are amazed and humbled by the act of kindness. They said they are grateful and think the children may have learned even more about the meaning of Christmas.
