LUCKEY, OH (WTOL) - The Wood County village of Luckey has seen a rash of car break-ins in the last week. Thieves have been taking cash, music players and navigation systems from at least seven different vehicles in the village.
Kurt Juergens' neighbor became a victim less than a week ago.
"He was very upset. He just didn't think it would happen in a small town like this where everybody knew everybody," Juergens said.
The thief took an iPod and $300 in cash from Juergens' neighbor. Juergens has lived in Luckey for his entire life, and he said it is rare to see this many break-ins at once.
"Every now and then, you'll hear something, but on the whole it's not a big problem here in town," he said.
The Wood County Sheriff's office and Luckey police said the break-ins all have something in common—the vehicles were not locked.
"It is a safe community, and there's a thought that you don't have to lock anything," said Sheriff Mark Wasylyshyn.
The Wood County Sheriff said crimes like these tend to be done by juveniles.
"It's something that tends to be the young people that are looking for something they can quickly turn into cash. If we can not tempt people by not having those things visible and we lock our cars, people are going to notice that, especially in a small town like Luckey," Wasylyshyn said.
Wasylyshyn said a hat was left behind at one of the crime scenes. They suspect it belongs to the suspect, and they will check the hat to see if there is a DNA match.
