TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - It's the new "$1 million question" in Toledo: When will Hollywood Casino Toledo open?
Construction crews are still hard at work to put the finishing touches on the casino, but Penn National's timeline to open the facility in April will likely be pushed back, due to the Ohio Casino Control Commission requiring more time to conduct background checks in order to issue a license.
"Yes, there may be some delays. I'm not going to suggest there are not going to be some, but we're going to try to mitigate that as best we can. We're going to make it as quick and appropriate as we possibly can." says State Rep. Barbara Sears.
Sears is confident Ohio lawmakers will approve new legislation soon to make sure the licensing process is streamlined:
"It's the consultant who's come back and said we need a little more time to do these background checks. My guess is we're going to go back to the consultant and say we're going to nudge you a little faster."
Toledo Mayor Mike Bell says while the licensing issue is out of his control, the casino opening is on his front burner:
"I'm going to do everything I can to make sure that if I have any influence we do whatever is necessary to get this thing back on track."
The mayor's concerned because delays will result in not only lost income tax revenue for the city, but lost business opportunities as well.
"We have businesses that are looking at the ability when that opens to be able to schedule different events because they know there'll be an influx of people coming into our city." said Bell.
The commission currently estimates Hollywood Casino Toledo will open in June.
