BASCOM, OH (WTOL) - Two Seneca County parents are in critical condition after their house caught fire early Tuesday morning.
It happened around 4 a.m. on Ash Street in Bascom. That's between Tiffin and Fostoria.
Bascom fire officials say the fire started in the kitchen as a grease fire but quickly spread. There were seven people inside the house at the time, including five children.
Two of those kids ran to their neighbor's house when they smelled smoke. That's when neighbor Aaron Scott came out, saw the fire, and jumped into action. He grabbed a ladder from his garage to get to the people trapped upstairs.
"The flames were busting out windows while I was going up the ladder," Scott said. "It was just crazy." He added, "I had a sense of relief when I brought the first baby down. I had relief, but I was still scared. I'm glad that I got them to safety."
Scott helped a 7-month old, a 4-year-old and mother Jennifer Peace get down from the second floor.
The father, Reynaldo Uballe and the fifth child also made it out of the house.
They were all taken to the hospital for treatment. Peace and Uballe are in critical condition at Mercy Saint Vincent Medical Center.
The house is a total loss.
The Red Cross is helping the family get settled.
Hopewell Louden High School and the Bascom fire station are collecting donations of clothes, money and food for the family.
The children are staying with their grandmother while their parents remain hospitalized.
