TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - For many in Toledo, the MLK Holiday is a day of service, to help keep the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. alive through service to others.
A food drive was held at the University of Toledo during the annual Unity Celebration, to benefit the Toledo MLK Kitchen for the Poor.
"To help others makes you feel good, that you did something for your community and this is the best way to do it today." says volunteer Lakesha Stewart-King.
"Because the economy these days many people can't give financially, but there's always ways through service, through volunteering." says volunteer Marguerite Benson-West.
The donated food items will be used for take-home food baskets for Toledoans in need.
"I'm inspired to go on and work harder myself." says Harvey Savage, the kitchen's executive director.
The kitchen also received help today to serve lunch, including 12-year-old Andre Arthur who pitched in to help:
"It's been good because I got to help people in need."
