TIFFIN, OH (WTOL) – The city of Tiffin is looking at possible layoffs if it cannot reach deals with its unions.
Meetings will be taking place Tuesday and Wednesday with city unions about health care costs. The city wants union workers to pay more for healthcare.
If the unions do not agree to pay more and stay at their contribution levels as last year, the city will lose $36,000 per month, totaling $430,000 for the whole year.
Mayor Arron Montz says that the city would look into laying off between 7 and 10 employees to offset the deficit. For this month, the city has cut overtime budgets in order to save those jobs, but it can't cut enough for February to avoid layoffs if the unions don't reach an agreement.
"It's scary because we're hoping we reach an agreement, I don't think any side wants to go beyond the bargaining table, because it's going to be detrimental to everyone. So I think right now, what we're trying to do is find out how we can get an agreement that keeps the city afloat, and avoids any kind of layoffs." said Montz.
Tiffin has deals with two out of four of its unions, and the Montz says that if an agreement cannot be reached, layoffs could start as soon as next month.
