TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) - Toledo Police are searching for the burglars who stole a local officer's guns Sunday night.
The burglary happened at the officer's home on Woodland in central Toledo. The officer works for the Fremont Police Department.
According to the police report, the back door was open with the door's window busted. The officer's main bedroom was the target. No other rooms were searched.
Police said the items stolen were the officer's gear holster and belt, two sets of handcuffs, along with two guns, including the officer's city-issued weapon, a glock 22 .40 caliber with three full clips and a personal 9 mm gun with two full clips.
The burglars did not take his bulletproof vest, city-issued radio or badge.
The officer was not home at the time and immediately called 911 when he noticed his guns were missing.
Fremont's Police Chief Tim Wiersma said it is a concerning crime because it endangers the public.
"The heightened concern is the bigger, larger capacity for the magazines. Police have a 15 round magazine, and the legal limit for a civilian is nine. So, there's six more bullets," said Wiersma.
The police report said the responding officers "made a general broadcast for officer safety on the stolen guns and magazines."
Wiersma said the Fremont officer involved was the victim of the crime and handled it correctly.
"He called the police in Toledo and before they had time to arrive, he called us here at work to say that his gun had been stolen from his home," Wiersma said.
The guns have serial numbers and Wiersma hopes they will be tracked down quickly.
