Income tax collection creates unhappiness locally

MAUMEE, OH (WTOL) – Maumee is one of the latest cities to add to the list of local governments who are unhappy about talk of centralizing income tax collection.

Officials in the city, along with Perrysburg, Holland and Sylvania have all told the state that they do not want it done.

While there is no law heading to legislation yet, city officials told WTOL's Cristy Gimbel that they hear centralized income tax collection is going to be worked into the state's next budget.

The Ohio department of taxation has said that many businesses have asked the state to address taxes in Ohio, but businesses have said the process is complicated, and has unnecessary costs.

The state says that taking this action will make Ohio "more business friendly," but local governments are worried what will happen to their main source of revenue if it leaves their hands.

"Our fear is that there will be mistakes or some of the distributions will be late or potentially could be claimed by the state itself in the case where they need to go ahead and balance their budget. What was basically a tax that was authorized by local voters for the betterment of their own community is now being used by state government." Maumee City Administrator John Jezak said.

Jezak also stated that his biggest fear is that they don't know the details of this project if it goes forward. He is hoping local governments will have a say before any decisions are made.
