Senior citizens request permanent community facility

Posted: Updated:

(WTOL) – Two communities are hoping to provide their seniors with a permanent place to meet. The village of Holland and Springfield Township are looking into the request from resident senior citizens. Officials are considering expanding the Holland community building on Clarion Avenue for the project.

About 50 Holland and Springfield Township seniors already meet every Wednesday at the Lodge at Strawberry Acres Park. Seniors meet to play card games, line dance, even play Wii. They also receive a moderately-priced meal from the Lucas County Senior Nutrition Program.

Several of these seniors approached city officials about getting a full-time facility. Springfield Township trustees are meeting with Holland officials to figure out the costs.

Holland Mayor Mike Yunker said they would ideally be able to fund it through their current budgets. Yunker feels it is important they serve their large senior population.

"Most of them are seniors who live by themselves. They're in apartments by themselves, and their only activity is maybe watching TV or playing solo card games. So this place gives them the ability to interact with one another," said Yunker.

Officials are hoping to work out funding by the summer, start expanding the community building in the fall, and open the full-time senior center by next spring.
