Fremont internet cafes face charges

Posted: Updated:

FREMONT, OH (WTOL) – Three Fremont internet cafes that were raided last month are facing charges. On Friday morning, 28 charges were filed against The Players Club, Lucky Dog and Lots of Fun.

The five week investigation began in November, and the businesses were raided by the Fremont police department in January.

The police department says that the cafes were operating illegally because customers were getting cash pay-outs for casino-style games.

The owners from all three cafes have been charged with operating a gambling house and gambling violations. They're also facing charges for criminal tools, which are machines with casino-style games on them.

Detectives also said they found liquor at The Lucky Dog, and the business will face charges for that because it did not have a liquor permit.

Detectives say that because there was so much evidence, it has taken nearly a month to file the charges.

"After we conducted our investigation, I think common sense dictates we present it to the prosecutor. The report itself is probably anywhere between 5 and 6 hundred pages. I think it's fair to the prosecutor that he takes his time and reads our report for beginning to end, before he makes a decision what kinds of charges." said Detective Sean O'Connell of the Fremont Police Department.

The Players Club has been fighting this raid, going as far as filing a federal lawsuit against the city of Fremont, the police department and the Ohio attorney general's office.
