TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Could the nation's competitive edge be lacking because of what is being taught in schools? A recent study conducted by the Thomas B. Fordham Institute showed it is possible, after grading each state's science standards. Some states are actually failing.

The institute graded kindergarten through senior science standards.

Ohio received a "B," Michigan received a "C," and Indiana received an "A-." Wyoming, along with nine other states, received an "F."

The report brings to concern the country's technological competitiveness, saying it is in jeopardy if some standards do not change.

Gary Thompson, director at Toledo Technology Academy, believes its curriculum is top notch.

"We are doing at least "B+" if not "A" work. The focus is on science, technology, engineering and math," said Thompson.

Thompson said another advantage the academy has is a staff with real-world experience in engineering.

"Our goal is for these students here to become problem solvers, take those disciplines and synthesize the knowledge and be able to apply them immediately," explained Thompson.
