PERRYSBURG TOWNSHIP, OH (WTOL) – The Perrysburg Township Police Department is running a police academy, but they said it is not for the officers. It is a new effort to connect the police with the people of Perrysburg.
The PTPD is accepting applications for its first Citizens' Police Academy. Police said the goal is to educate the public about how the department works.
The program will run for nine weeks. Students will meet Thursday nights to do different activities, including a ride-along with police officers and mock trials.
Officers said the academy is something they have wanted to do for a while. They expect it to be an eye-opening experience.
"Some people, all they do is they see police driving back and forth. They don't realize what we're actually doing in between the times that they see us. So that should be very interesting for them," explained Sgt. Mike Munoz.
According to the PTPD, the academy is open to everyone, although they will give people who live in Perrysburg first choice.
Only 20 spots are available. Anyone who wants to apply can visit the PTPD website.
