City weighs cost of proposed camera project

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – This City of Toledo is moving forward with a plan to purchase and install surveillance cameras around the city, but at least one councilmen has concerns about the cost of the plan.

"My major concern is, we will have depleted every trust fund we have in the police department as a result of this," said councilmen Michael Collins.  "It's getting to be a $1.2, $1.3 million project.  So it could take another quarter of a million or $250,000 out of our capital improvements fund."

Mayor Mike Bell says the project will be expensive, but worth the cost.  "These funds, there's constantly money going back into them. Right now the issue for us is that people are worried about being safe in our city," said Bell. "If we could have saved one life due to this technology then it'll be well worth it."

Lt. Michael Troendle presented the plan to Toledo City Council Tuesday, and argues the plan will be good for the city.  "I believe it'll have a positive impact on our city. As you know, we have the shooting instances that are occurring so maybe if we can get some of this gunshot recognition technology out there, maybe that'll help us curb some of the violence we're seeing now," said Troendle.

Council will continue discussion of the plan Friday at a Safety Committee meeting.
