TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Longtime athletic rivals Maumee and Perrysburg may soon be uniting in order to save important programs.
The school districts may begin to share after-school bus services in order to save money.
For the remainder of the school year, a Maumee bus could pick up a Perrysburg student involved in extracurricular activities, and Perrysburg busses could return the favor any time the schedules allow it.
"I think this is one of those cases where our voters are saying before you come to us, you need to find ways to cut costs." said Perrysburg Superintendent Tom Hosler.
"I don't think it matters that it is Maumee versus Perrysburg. If you are saving money and both kids need to go to the same area, sure, of course that's a good idea." said Tom Pasquinelli, who coaches wrestling for Maumee youth sports.
The districts are working together in other ways too, such as Perrysburg's preschool classes that are held in a church due to overcrowding at elementary schools. Those classes are talking about renting space at the now-closed Union Elementary in Maumee.
Hosler says that nobody should expect either district's baseball or basketball teams to be on the same bus any time soon.
