Oregon begins final phase of bike trail

Posted: Updated:

OREGON, OH (WTOL) – The city of Oregon has begun the final phase of its bike trail project, which will go from Pearson Park all the way to the Maumee Bay State Park. Officials expect it be nearly ten miles long.

The city became the first community in the area to adopt a master plan for bike lanes and trails in 1999. Since then, trails and lanes have popped up throughout the city.

Trails already connect Clay High School with the recreation complex and Pearson Metro Park.

The final ordinance for the project will go before council on Monday. If it is approved, the trail will extend all the way out to Maumee Bay State Park.

The entire project has been paid for by an 80-20 match, which means state and federal dollars have covered 80% of the cost, and the city paid the other 20%.

The city's administration says this is a major asset to the community.

"From making our roads safer, keeping people fit, making sure we think of a complete streets program... We think the bike approach has been good for Oregon, and it's worked." Mike Beazley, an Oregon City Administrator told WTOL.

The entire trail is expected to be complete by the end of the summer of 2013.
