Council approves first reading of surveillance camera plan

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Toledo City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to approve the first reading of a plan to install up to 150 surveillance cameras around the city.  The legislation will face second and third readings, and is expected to be passed, at a meeting two weeks from Tuesday.

The plan will cost $1.6 million, of which the city will pay $700,000.  A police fund of money seized in criminal investigations and a county grant will cover the rest.

The cameras will be placed throughout the city, targeting high crime areas. Some will be mobile, while others will be permanently mounted. All the cameras will feed to a "real time crime center" in the Safety Building. Police Chief Diggs says the department does not have the manpower to continuously monitor the cameras, but they will record 24 hours per day. Some cameras will detect and focus on the sound of gunshots.
