MAUMEE, OH (WTOL) – When the Maumee Police Department saw an increase in car break-ins last year, they decided to take matters into their own hands, and crack down on crime.
The city of Maumee reported their hotel parking lots to be targets for car break-ins after electronics were stolen from several cars in the summer and fall.
Police officers spent more time in the Dussel and Reynolds corridor, extending their bike patrol in the fall. They also added on units doing surveillance.
Police spoke to hotel and motel owners, asking them to remind patrons to bring their valuables inside. They also made seven related arrests.
The efforts began to work.
"They went from several days a week down to maybe just a Friday night here and there or a Saturday night here and there." said Chief Robert Zink.
Zink acknowledges that crime does go down in the winter, and he will be prepared once the weather warms up again.
