TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Newt Gingrich has made energy independence a central part of his campaign, and a newly released ad set to come out before super Tuesday features his promise to lower gas prices to $2.50 per gallon.
With gas prices reaching a nine-month high- as high as $3.69 in the Toledo area- some residents are saying depending on oil from home could make a difference.
"Think they all say a lot of things when they're trying to get into office, ya have to take it with a dose of salt." says Louann Briggs, one of the many Toledo residents who aren't sure that Gingrich can do what he says he will.
"If you are paying $4 a gallon, you have a lot less money left each week than if you are paying $2.50 a gallon. Now $2.50 may sound like it is an impossible number, but that's baloney." Gingrich stated, adding his plan is to increase energy independence, expand domestic oil and gas drilling, and approve The Keystone Oil Pipeline.
Those are plans that Toledo resident Will Harbauer likes to hear:
"If Newt says he can keep gas prices at 2.50, then he must have a plan to allow drilling and allow oil production to be done in this country that's I mean… That's something I'd look forward to, yeah."
The national average price was reported at $3.55 on Sunday, and prices continue to rise.
