TOLEDO, OH (WTOL) – Polls will open for the primary election across Ohio at 6:30 a.m. Tuesday morning, and Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur's 29-year reign is facing a possible end.
Northwest Ohio residents will soon find out if Kaptur can beat her competitors, longtime Democrat Congressman Dennis Kucinich, and newcomer Graham Veysey.
Kaptur took part in her Election Day-eve tradition of greeting supporters are Georgio's in downtown Toledo Monday night, keeping in mind that she needs new votes from the new 9th district, which now stretches to Cleveland.
Re-districting has pushed 10th district Congressman Dennis Kucinich into the race as her most dangerous opponent yet.
Kaptur says she is optimistic, especially with the help of her phone bank:
"In Lucas county, in Toledo, in Ottawa County, in Erie County and Lorain County, if our people turn out, we win."
The question remains: How heavily will the eastern parts of the new district weigh on this race, where Kucinich is the popular politician?
Kaptur, the Representative who has served on powerful House Appropriations Committees admits that she has thought about what life will be like if she loses:
"No matter what happens, I serve the people of this region in whatever capacity God allows me. So we just hope that we don't lose the seniority that we have, it's a once in a lifetime opportunity to rise to the highest levels of the committees on which I serve."
WTOL could not reach the Kucinich campaign for comment on Monday, but the third candidate in the race, political newcomer Graham Veysey of Cleveland, continued to reach out to local voters, even making a stop at Ralphie's in Oregon.
Veysey predicts an upset over Kaptur and Kucinich:
"They are yearning for someone who is not a career politician. I am running against two people who have been politicians for a combined 70 years. It is time to give someone else a chance."
All three candidates plan to make a final push for votes until the polls close Tuesday night.
