SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, OH (WTOL) - Two people died in an overnight blaze in Springfield Township after a fire broke out at Hidden Cedars Condominiums just before 11 p.m. Sunday. The complex is located on Garden Road near Interstate 475.
Enormous flames and thick smoke could be seen and smelled all along I-475.
"I was crying. I was crying and hoping that everyone was okay," said Mary, whose daughter lived in the condominiums.
Mary had just gotten off of work when her daughter called her in a panic.
"She said, 'Dominique's apartment is on fire. The whole building is burning up,' and I just hung up and I just came here," said Mary.
Mary said her grandchildren and great grandchildren made it out of the burning building alive.
Many others gathered with their loved ones but could do nothing more than watch Building G burn to the ground.
"We just hope it didn't spread with the breeze out here," said Patricia Meeks, whose daughter also lived in the condos.
Maria Meeks said it was devastating to watch families lose everything.
"Kids are worried about their friends. It's sad," said Meeks.
The Springfield Township fire chief estimated the damage to be around $1 million. There is still no word on what caused the fire.
