Penn National advertises to lure casino visitors

Posted: Updated:

DETROIT, MI (Toledo News Now) - For years the casino operations in Detroit have been advertising in Ohio to draw customers north of the border, but when Hollywood Casino Toledo opens, how successful will that operation be in advertising and drawing customers south of the border?

A spokesman for Penn National says their ad campaign is focusing on the Detroit, Fort Wayne and Toledo markets, in hopes of luring frequent casino visitors.

People such as Lou Graham:

"I play mostly poker but if I get bored I'll play slots and blackjack. I've read about Hollywood Casino on the internet and I was pretty excited about it. It's a different casino to go to in the area and it's not that far from Detroit."

The casinos from the Detroit area have billboards placed in the Toledo area, and it's a common sight to see cars with Ohio plates pulling into Detroit casinos.

Penn National aims to reverse that trend as much as possible. Tomeka Little says while she hasn't heard about Hollywood Casino, she plans to learn about it and possibly visit when it opens:

"Because of the destination Toledo from Detroit to make it a 2-day stay there would be amazing."

Penn National on Wednesday made a formal presentation to the Ohio Casino Control Commission in hopes of securing an operating license and set an opening date.

The target date in May 29, and the commission is expected to set a firm opening date next week at its meeting on May 9.
