Toledo Zoo to begin aquarium project

Posted: Updated:

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) – The Toledo Zoo unveiled its latest project, the Tembo Trail Friday, but it isn't the only project that the capital improvements levy helped fund.

This summer will be last that visitors will see the aquarium at the zoo as it is. When voters approved the capital improvements levy back in 2006, they were helping fund the face lift that the aquarium is getting ready to undergo.

The aquarium will shut down in the fall, and begin a remodeling process.

Officials say this zoo has been a long standing gem in the community, giving lots of educational and entertainment opportunities to Toledo area residents.

They want to continue the tradition by improving upon its history.

"Well, I think we've been very creative and innovative with what we've done. This is the history of the Toledo zoo. It's really leading the way in innovation.  And as with everything, our W.P. Hay era buildings were built in the 1930s, and they need work," said Dr. Annie Baker of the Toledo Zoo.

The aquarium will remain open this summer, and the renovation project is expected to wrap up in 2015.
