Patrol traffic stops, arrests up this Memorial Day weekend

COLUMBUS, OH (Toledo News Now) - The Ohio State Highway Patrol made more traffic stops and impaired driving and drug arrests this Memorial Day weekend compared to the 2011 holiday weekend. In addition, 11 people lost their lives over the weekend, which is a four-year low for the reporting period.

The four-day reporting period began Friday, May 25 at midnight and ran through Monday, May 28 at 11:59 p.m. 

Patrol traffic stops increased more than 13 percent, operating a vehicle impaired arrests increased nearly 2 percent and drug arrests were up nearly 15 percent. 

The Patrol's Columbus District, encompassing central Ohio counties, experienced the highest amount of OVI and drug arrests, with 117 and 71 arrests.

The Patrol made 19,919 nonenforcement contacts with 5,960 to assist motorists. Total crash investigations went down more than 6 percent.

Aggressive driving arrests, which includes following too close, failure to yield, improper passing, passing a stopped school bus and reckless operation, increased more than 40 percent.
