TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The city has big plans to demolish NorthTowne Mall's property and sell it, but they were denied some help from the state to get the project done.

City Council approved the plan to demolish the old mall back in December 2011. As part of the plan, everything would be torn down except Super Fitness.

The city of Toledo said an extra $1.5 million from the state would definitely help in the NorthTowne project. The grant money would have helped take care of additional things to make the property ready to sell to a developer or potential buyer.

Still, city officials said not having those funds will not stop the demolition.

"The state grant was going to supplement the demolition work, and help clear the land, the slab, and some of the utility work, and to help make the property more development-ready," said Joel Mazur, brownfield redevelopment officer with the city of Toledo.

Mazur said the mall is coming down no matter what. The next step is getting the contract for the company to do the demolition, which should start this summer.
