TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - The last three mornings have kept Toledo Firefighters busy. Crews have responded to at least a half dozen fires at vacant homes and businesses since Sunday night.
Toledo fire crews battled a vacant house blaze in south Toledo early Wednesday that is being called a possible case of arson.
The flames broke out just after 1 a.m. on Wasaon near Western. City crews demolished the building that burned, but another vacant home next door was also damaged by the fire.
Residents are concerned some think this is all great fun.
"No, I'm not surprised cause the kids like to burn stuff up around here. I'm not surprised," said Lori Robinson.
Robinson lives feet away and said the property had become a nuisance.
"It's been an eyesore. Everybody like to put their garbage in there all the time," said Robinson.
Just this week, there have been about a half dozen suspicious fires in the middle of the night, mostly in east Toledo.
"We don't see it as a trend. I would call it normal seasonal activity," said Lt. Matthew Hertzfeld of Toledo Fire and Rescue.
Hertzfeld said there is always a peak in fires this time of the year. He said investigators are keeping a close eye on things and if need be, the arson task force could be activated like it was last summer.
"We look at a large loss of life, numerous people lost in a fire. Could be a commercial type structure where there's a large dollar loss, those types of things. Right now, we aren't seeing that," explained Hertzfeld.
Wednesday morning's fire spread to a vacant house across the alley, which is why firefighters said smoke alarms and an escape plan are essential.
Robinson hopes whoever is setting these fires is tired too.
"They ain't got nothing to do better. Nothing to do better. They just want to see some action in the neighborhood," said Robinson.
No injuries were reported.
The fire remains under investigation. Anyone with information about any of these fires can call CrimeStopper at 419-255-1111.
