Red Cross taps national blood stash amid OH strike

Posted: Updated:

CLEVELAND (AP) - A protracted strike by American Red Cross blood-collection workers in northeast Ohio has forced the national organization to dip into its national inventory to meet demand at Cleveland area hospitals.

That's both encouraging and concerning the 250 members of Teamsters Local 507 as their strike nears the end of its 17th week. The dispute centers on health care costs and working conditions.

A Red Cross spokeswoman tells The Plain Dealer local blood drives have fallen from up to 25 per day, to five, as the strike continues.

Teamsters leader Albert Mixon says impact on supply shows the strike is having an impact.

However, striking workers also conducted their own blood drive recently to show their intent isn't to hurt the Red Cross or area hospitals.
