TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - A Toledo family is pleading for help in finding their dog. The dog was specially trained to look after a young man who suffers from regular seizures. When he began to convulse, Shadow ran to the family to alert them.
Shadow was last seen in Dorothy McCruter's backyard in north Toledo. The gate was found open on Sunday morning.
"I don't know if he was taken out of my backyard or if he just ran off, but the thing of it is he's a medical dog. I need him for my grandson," McCruter said.
McCruter said her grandson Anthony has a serious brain disorder. Anthony is 20, but functions as a child and has several seizures a week. Shadow's job was to wake the family when the seizures happened.
"Shadow'll immediately come jump in our bed. Bark bark bark. Bark bark bark. I'll say, "Anthony, Shadow?" And he'll take off to the room, and he'll lay right by his side," McCruter said.
However, without Shadow around, McCruter lost that sense of security. She said Anthony had a seizure Monday night, and no one woke her up.
"I didn't find out he had a seizure until I woke up this morning and found him on the floor," she said.
McCruter spent the past few days asking neighbors if they have seen the dog. She also put up a few flyers, but nothing has come up so far.
"Just please bring him back home. If it's money you want, call. We'll pay. Won't be no questions asked, but we need this dog," she said.
Shadow is a small black poodle with a red tint if you look closely. If you know anything about his location, call 419-917-0636.
