Toledo hotels say casino has improved business

TOLEDO, OH (Toledo News Now) - Toledo hotel managers say the Hollywood Casino Toledo has helped business, but they say there is still plenty of room for more.

While customers are trying to cash in at the casino, it will be a while before the casino itself can cash in by building its own hotel. First, downtown hotels have to reach a certain occupancy level, and they are still far from that, though they are seeing a steady increase in casino customers.

The Country Inn and Suites saw a boost in business even before Hollywood Casino Toledo opened.

"It's definitely added business for us. Especially in the pre-opening stages where we had a lot of behind the scenes workers and things like that here too," said General Manager Kristin Dunn.

Now that the casino is open, gamers are reserving rooms too. Country Inn and Suites is one of 3 Rossford hotels near the Ohio Turnpike and Interstate 75 interchange that have special casino rates. Dunn says so far her hotel has had 35 bookings at that rate, and 9 just yesterday accounted for more than ten percent of the hotel's occupancy.

"We anticipate just that growing and growing as time goes on and the longer the casino is open," Dunn said.

Downtown Toledo hotels are cashing in too. The Grand Plaza has seen most of its casino business on weekend nights.  About twenty rooms, which is ten percent of the hotel's bookings have connected with the casino, and more business means hiring more staff.

Grand Plaza Hotel General Manager Jim Koen says more business could be on the way. The casino may start reserving hotel rooms for its best customers, and one bus tour has already reserved rooms. More could be on the way.

"The biggest impact will be when we start getting the bus tours when we start getting 50-60-70 room nights on a Friday and Saturday because the casino is here in Toledo," Koen said.

Koen expects casino reservations to double.
