LAKE TOWNSHIP, OH (Toledo News Now) – Lake Township Police, Fire and EMS crews will soon have a new emergency radio system that will allow for more communication and collaboration with other area emergency crews.

Department officials say they became aware of an issue after the township was hit by a tornado in 2010.

"Shortly after the tornado we realized that the communications were a critical component that we needed to address," said Lake Township Police Chief Mark Hummer.

The township had been operating its own radio system, making it hard to integrate with other area departments.  The new system will be fully compatible with all emergency crews based in Lucas County, and many from northern Wood County.

"All the agencies in Lucas County and everybody in northern Wood County will be able to switch to one frequency and the dispatcher will be able to talk to all the units that are involved," said Hummer.
